That GOOD GOOD Around the Web

Anyone who has been reading my blog for a while now knows that I am a lover of independent magazines, both online and in print. Spook Magazine is a “literary arts mash-up” which entered my radar back in December. What initially captured my eye was the first issue’s absolutely stunning cover, created by the brilliant Stephanie Matthews. As if the cover isn't stunning enough, this magazine is full of flowing, poignant, masterful pieces of writing. Those of you who enjoy devouring deliciously crafted poetry, fiction, and non-fiction writing, purchase a print and/or digital copy of Spook! You will not be disappointed.

Also, you all simply must listen to the glorious mixes on Spook’s Soundcloud page, Spook Radio. Good reads, good visuals, good sounds. What more could one ask for?

The Refutation of “Good Hair” is a powerful new project by the brilliant Nakeya B. In this series, Nakeya has chosen to explore the literal meaning of the historically used phrase “good hair”. In her own words, “In each image a woman of color is seen poised upright while consuming a handful of hair. Accompanying the portraits are a selection still life arrangements placing hair and traditional African-American cuisine in the same setting. Doing such suggests "good hair" is nothing more than something to be consumed as if it were food”.

In honor of its 125th year anniversary, National Geographic has taken to Tumblr to curate a number of iconic vintage images from the magazine’s archives, many of which were never published. It is safe to say that FOUND is quickly becoming one of my favorite Tumblr blogs. The images are absolutely breathtaking. If you have a minute (or 2) to spare, make sure you check it out.

This song has been on heavy, heavy repeat for the past few days. Fresh off of Tyler, The Creator’s new album, Wolf, comes a blissfully breezy tune featuring two of my favorite singers, Coco of Quadron and Erykah Badu. Click the play button below the photo to listen.

A Look Through My Lens, Part 8

A Look Through My Lens is an ongoing series on That GOOD GOOD Blog which features awe-inspiring photographers from all over the world. I have had the absolute privilege of interviewing 14 photographers thus far through this series and today I have yet another amazing addition to the ‘A Look Through My Lens’ family, Faisal Mohammed from Atlanta, GA. As always, I interviewed today's featured photographer and his responses to my questions accompany his gorgeous photos in this post. Please enjoy Faisal's story as he shares about his passion for his art form and where his love of photography all began.

I have been into photography for over a year now. I began drawing at a young age and I've always known I wanted to be an artist. I was introduced to a girl by some friends of mine, and she happened to be a photographer. We started hanging out very often and her photos intrigued me. I became very interested in the art form and asked her to teach me more. The rest is history. We barely speak now, but I'm thankful for all she taught me. I guess we meet people for a reason right?
I take really earthy, natural photos. It can vary from portraits to editorials but with a different approach and style.

Dark, thoughtful, and interesting are words I would use to describe my photography. I’m still experimenting, I want to be versatile. My portraits and personal projects have a lot of darkness to them. I take a different approach to other projects that I do.
People, objects and fashion are my favorite things to capture. With people: the different auras certain individuals have around them, the scars on their skin, and the stories written in their eyes. With objects: the little objects we fail to pay attention to. With Fashion: The color, the style, the awkward postures.

I use a Canon Rebel xsi. A friend of mine was looking to upgrade his equipment and had it for sale, but I had no funds at the time. I spoke to a relative and he lent me some money for the camera. Best $300 i've ever spent. I haven't found the need purchase another camera yet i have learned to love this one.
I admire a lot of photographers, both new and old: Kesler Tran for his subjects and style - Rog Walker, Andre Wagner and Josh Wool for their story telling abilities, and Gordon Parks, Arthur Elgort and Patrick Demarchelier for their intriguing photographs. Each and every one of these photographers inspire me a lot.

Michael "Dos" Tousana

While perusing through one of my new favorite photography tumblrs, Laarte by Law Agyei, I came across photos of an incredible artist by the name of Michael "Dos" Tousana.

Interestingly enough, I had come across Michael’s work about 2 years ago via tumblr, but had lost his site link in the ocean of bookmarks currently on my laptop (I’m a bookmarking fiend). Seeing Michael’s artwork again after such a long time was a beautiful feeling and one I knew I needed to share with all of you. I am so taken by the uninhibited nature of his pieces; everything about them is so vibrant and daring. I feel such a deep, almost impossible soulfulness when I look upon the colors and patterns.

GOODGOODmusic: That GOOD GOOD Blog's Official Music Tumblr

I’m very excited to unveil my latest mini project: GOODGOODmusic.tumblr.com
This tumblr blog will serve as my musical stream of consciousness. I will simply be posting songs that I am currently listening to and, of course, songs from my past that I am still enamored by (I love me some old school music). I've really enjoyed sharing my musical library with you all through That GOOD GOOD Blog already, and I believe that GOODGOODmusic will allow me to share songs more frequently, which is my desire. Not a fan of tumblr? No worries, I will still be doing my usual music posts on this blog too. I’m really excited about this and I hope you all enjoy the songs that I will be posting! I plan on updating it very often (everyday if time allows me to). Here are a few of the songs you can currently find on GOODGOODmusic:

Do you have a tumblr? If so, please feel free to leave your link in a comment! I’d love to follow you!
