This One Is For Dilla
Today, we celebrate
the life of a man who many, including myself, consider to be the greatest
producer to ever grace this planet. James Dewitt Yancey did not create beats,
he created art. His work gave birth to emotion. I’m telling you, whenever I
listen to his albums Donuts or Ruff Draft or I play a lil’ Slum Village
(or anything Dilla produced for that matter), I am overcome by such strong
emotion. Dilla put his heart, his soul, and his brilliant mind into his music
and influenced so many artists that I love and listen to today. And for those
of you who have never heard of J Dilla, I guarantee that you have probably
heard and fallen in love with some of his work already without even knowing it.
Here are a few of my favorite beats and songs produced by J Dilla, including the entire audio of his final work Donuts. Please enjoy!
